Opentable is currently the largest player in the market. Completely dominant in the US, the highest market share in the UK (although not so dominant), and a slight presence in continental Europe. This stunning growth can be attributed to being the first company to offer fully live online reservations, a solid and robust software solution, and an extensive marketing campaign. But the biggest factor in their growth has been the aggressive injection of venture capital to fund the growth.
This early success has had some drawbacks though. Some might say they have become arrogant; believing their way is the best and ONLY way of doing things. This has led to some of their competitors (particularly in Europe), mainly Eveve and Livebookings, enjoying considerable success when going after the Opentable portfolio.
That said; the in house table management software and hardware that Opentable offer is a formidable piece of kit, particularly when it comes to the in depth-analysis that is possible. This is becoming increasingly useful to restaurant managers who want to know how the diner booked, when they booked, what offer they booked for, how many courses they ate, what they ate, the list goes on.
Main Competitor: Eveve
